What does TD home insurance cover?
TD home insurance offers three levels of home insurance coverage to all customers.
In addition to basic and enhanced homeowner’s, tenant, and condo insurance, TD offers TD Insurance Private Client Advice, a premium home insurance service for high-value homes.
Standard coverage options
All TD home insurance quotes include the following standard coverage options:
- Combined limits for property coverage: Rather than listing separate limits for dwelling coverage, other structures, contents coverage, and additional living expenses, TD assigns a single combined limit in multiples of $1 million to each home insurance policy. You can only raise this limit by increments of $1 million.
- Personal liability insurance: TD customers can choose between $1 million and $2 million of personal liability coverage. Additional liability coverage can only be purchased by contacting an advisor for optional umbrella coverage.
- Extended water damage: TD’s extended water damage packages includes coverage for sewer backup, ground and surface water caused by rainfall or snowmelt, and overland flooding. It can’t be removed and is available in increments from $15,000 to your full policy limit.
- Special limits for high-value items: Jewellery, bikes, watercraft, artwork, and wine or spirits are all subject to specific limits on top of your contents coverage.
- Deductibles: TD policy deductibles can be set between $1,500 and $20,000, with separate deductibles for windstorm damage, hail damage, and extended water damage.
All TD home insurance policies are all-risks policies, meaning they’ll cover your home and property against all causes of loss except those specifically listed as exclusions in your policy.
Optional coverage and endorsements
Beyond the standard coverage included with every policy, TD home insurance customers can customize their plan with the following options:
- Enhanced limits for valuables: You can raise the default limits for bikes, watercraft, jewellery, art, and wine/spirits in increments of $5,000 to a maximum of $250,000 for each category.
- Umbrella coverage: Risk-averse clients or those with a high net worth can extend their liability coverage by asking an advisor about umbrella insurance.
- Identity theft recovery: This add-on will pay up to $50,000 to help restore your identity and cover expenses related to an identity theft incident.
- Eco-efficient rebuild: This endorsement extends your eligible coverage up to an additional 10% to cover the cost of repairing your home with eco-friendly materials.
- Family coverage: TD’s family coverage offers cyberbullying protection, coverage for children’s belongings while they’re living away at school, coverage for belongings of parents in a nursing home, and additional living expenses and liability coverage for children and dependent parents.
- Claim forgiveness: With this add-on, your premium won’t go up after your first home insurance claim and you’ll still be considered “claims-free” for underwriting purposes.
- Earthquake insurance: Earthquake protection can be added with deductibles from 4% to 30% of your total coverage limit.
- Settle Your Way: This optional endorsement allows customers to decide between rebuilding their home and taking a cash settlement in the event of a major loss.
TD home insurance discounts
TD Insurance offers at least seven distinct discounts for home insurance:
- Alumni and professional discounts: TD’s preferred rates for qualifying alumni and professionals offer significant savings.
- Home and auto bundle: TD states that customers who bundle home and auto insurance could earn an average of 25% off their premiums if already receiving an alumni or professional discount.
- Buy online discount: Those who purchase TD home insurance online are eligible for up to 10% off their premium for their first year.
- Claims-free discount: If you can show that you haven’t filed a home insurance claim in the last three years, you could be eligible for a discount of 20–30% off your premium (location dependent).
- New home discount: TD offers an unspecified discount to homeowners insuring a property built within the last five years.
- Monitored alarm discounts: If your home has a centrally-monitored fire or burglar alarm or a water leak detection system, you may be eligible for a discounted rate.
- TD customer discount: If you already own one or more financial products from TD, such as a savings account, a loan, or a credit card, you could be eligible for a discount.
Like most insurers, TD may offer more discounts than they advertise publicly. Consider working with an insurance advisor to review your discount eligibility with TD.
How much does TD home insurance cost?
TD home insurance costs average around $149/month for homeowners in Ontario, with rates as low as $120/month for basic coverage and as high as $168/month for enhanced coverage.
If you request home insurance quotes from TD, you may see higher or lower premiums based on:
- Province: Homeowners in provinces subject to extreme weather risk, such as Alberta, may see significantly higher rates.
- Home location: TD’s pricing may take into consideration your home’s proximity to fire halls/hydrants, bodies of water, and property crime hotspots.
- Home age: Older homes cost more to insure because they’re more likely to sustain extensive damage in the event of a weather incident, fire, or other cause of loss.
- Roof age: The older your roof, the higher your home’s risk of damage from a wide range of perils.
TD home insurance rates in Ontario
* All quotes are for a 45-year-old male applicant with a detached or semi-detached two-storey home built between 2000 and 2015 with a roof upgraded in 2020.
TD home insurance bundled rates
To determine how powerful TD’s bundling discounts are, we requested bundled quotes for each property with a 2019 Honda Civic Sport.
* Recommended coverage tier.
On average, bundling reduced our TD home insurance quotes by $6–$8/month, or about 5%. That’s considerably less than competitors’ bundled savings, and less than TD’s advertised bundling discounts for alumni and professionals.
Over the course of a 25-year mortgage, TD’s bundling discounts could save you between $1,800 and $2,400 on home insurance premiums.
The TD home insurance claims process
If you need to make a home insurance claim with TD, you’ll follow the process outlined below:
- Document the loss: Create an inventory of all lost or damaged property, along with receipts, photos, and video evidence if possible. Do not dispose of any damaged property before contacting TD.
- Report the claim as soon as possible: Once it’s safe to do so, review the damage to your home and personal belongings, take steps to prevent further damage (e.g. covering up holes in your roof or windows), and reach out to TD to report the loss.
- Wait to be contacted by a Claims Advisor: An advisor will reach out within 48 business hours of the reported claim. You’ll need to go over what happened and all details of the loss to your property. You may need to provide additional documentation or fill out a Schedule of Loss form. Keep records of this entire process.
- Select a contractor to make repairs: Once your Claims Advisor has confirmed the extent of the damage and the payout you’ll be eligible for, you can book a contractor to complete repairs. TD has a preferred vendor network, but you are not required to work with the contractors they recommend.
- Receive payment: If you work with a preferred TD vendor, TD will pay your claim directly to them, leaving you to pay your deductible directly to the contractor. If you go outside TD’s preferred network, you’ll receive your claim payout by electronic funds transfer or cheque.

Is TD home insurance right for you?
TD home insurance is a good option for many Ontario homeowners—as long as you get a good price.
TD has an established reputation in Canada’s home insurance industry as a reliable provider with good claims service and excellent coverage; however, the ongoing climate crisis has led TD to significantly raise homeowners’ premiums in certain high-risk areas. If you’re seeing good prices from TD, it’s still a good option, but be aware that all home insurance rates are subject to change at renewal.
