What does Sonnet home insurance cover?

Sonnet home insurance offers all-risk home insurance policies that cover your home and its contents against a wide range of perils, from house fires to theft to floods. All-risk home insurance, the standard type of policy available from Sonnet, covers your home against all perils (or causes of loss) except those explicitly listed as exclusions in your policy.

Common excluded perils include war, terrorism, wear and tear, earth movement including earthquakes, and certain forms of water damage. Some exclusions can be added back through policy endorsements.

Standard coverage options

All Sonnet home insurance quotes include a Base Package with the following standard coverage options:

  • Global limit of insurance: Your Global Limit from Sonnet includes coverage for your home and detached structures, your personal belongings, and extra expenses after a loss (i.e., loss of use). Sonnet’s default global limit is $1.5 million.
  • Personal liability: This coverage offers financial protection if you unintentionally hurt someone or damage their property, either at home or anywhere in the world. You can choose a $1 million or $2 million limit, or call a Sonnet representative for more coverage.
  • Policy deductible: Sonnet offers $1,000, $2,000, and $5,000 deductibles.
  • Water damage deductible: Your policy has a separate deductible which applies to the basic water damage included in your Base Package, overland water claims (if you add overland water coverage) and sewer backup claims (if you add sewer backup coverage). You can set this deductible to $2,000 or $5,000.
  • Hail deductible: A separate deductible applies to hail claims. You can set it at $2,000 or $5,000.
  • Bylaw coverage: This included coverage pays up to $25,000 to rebuild or repair your home in compliance with updated bylaws after a covered loss.

Optional coverage and endorsements

You can add various optional endorsements to your base package to extend or modify your coverage. These include:

  • Sewer backup coverage: This add-on covers water damage caused by a sewer backup. Limits start at $10,000 and can go up to $100,000 or your full policy limit.
  • Overland water coverage: This covers flood damage caused by overflowing bodies of fresh water, excessive rain, spring runoff, and snowmelt. You can’t add it unless you already have sewer backup coverage, and limits range from $10,000 to your full policy limit.
  • Increased custom limits for personal belongings: Sonnet offers three custom limits packages for personal belongings, ranging from $10,000–$30,000 per item and $50,000–$100,000 for the total custom limit.
  • High value items: If you own just one or two items that exceed your standard custom limit, Sonnet allows you to list them individually and insure their exact value, along with a description that can help to simplify claims.
  • Earthquake coverage: Homeowners in earthquake-prone regions can add this coverage with a percentage-base deductible equal to 5%, 10%, or 15% of your total claim amount.
  • Green endorsement: This add-on offers $10,000 to repair your property after a covered loss using environmentally friendly materials.
  • Identity theft coverage: This endorsement will pay up to $25,000 for legal fees and other costs associated with an identity theft, such as replacing identity documents or lost wages.
  • First claim forgiveness: With this endorsement, your premium won’t go up as the result of your first rateable home insurance claim.

How much does Sonnet home insurance cost?

On average, home insurance from Sonnet costs about $175/month, with quotes as low as $97/month for a basic policy with no water damage coverage or endorsements and as high as $250/month or more for premium plans.

  • Province: We’ve pulled sample rates for Ontario, but other provinces may have higher or lower average costs based on climate patterns, crime rates, and building materials and labor costs.
  • Home location: The exact location of your home, including its proximity to fire halls and hydrants, plays a role in the cost of coverage. Rural homes may see higher rates because their access to fire services is less robust.
  • Home age: Older homes often cost more to insure than new homes, since they’re more likely to sustain extensive damage from the same threats.

The Sonnet home insurance claims process

To file a home insurance claim with Sonnet, this is the process you’ll need to follow:

  1. Document your loss: In order to process a claim, Sonnet needs as much information as possible about the incident that caused your loss and the nature and extent of the damage. Write down what happened, including the date and time, and create a detailed inventory of lost and damaged property. Take photos and video, if possible, to document any property damage, and collect receipts and invoices to prove ownership and value.
  2. Mitigate further loss: In some cases, prompt action is required to prevent further damage to your home. For instance, it’s your responsibility to cover up holes in your roof, windows, or walls that could let in rain and cause water damage. If emergency repairs are required, Sonnet’s claims team will help you set them up.
  3. Report the claim: As soon as possible after the loss, report the claim to Sonnet. Provide as much information as possible and follow the claims team’s instructions regarding further documentation.
  4. Choose your contractor: Sonnet may recommend one or more vendors to complete the repairs to your property, but you can also choose your own contractor. Try to get repair estimates from at least two or three vendors.
  5. Authorize repairs and collect your settlement: Depending on your situation and the type of claim you filed, Sonnet may pay vendors directly or send you a cheque to reimburse your costs.
