What does Intact home insurance cover?

Intact home insurance covers your home and personal belongings if they’re stolen or damaged by a wide range of perils. It also covers your civil liability if you’re legally responsible for unintentional injury or property damage to others. Intact home insurance policies offer comprehensive coverage, which guards against damage caused by:

  • Fire and smoke
  • Explosions
  • Certain forms of water damage
  • Theft and vandalism
  • Lightning
  • Hail and windstorms
  • Impact from falling objects (trees, electrical poles, etc.)

Standard coverage options

All Intact home insurance quotes include the following standard coverage options:

  • Coverage for damages to your home: Property damage coverage includes dwelling coverage, private structures coverage, contents coverage, and loss of use coverage. By default, your contents coverage is set at 75% of your dwelling coverage limit.
  • Personal liability insurance: Always included in your policy, this coverage covers the cost of lawsuits filed against you for bodily injury or property damage. $1 million is the default limit, but you can call to request a higher limit.
  • Hail and wind water damage: This standard coverage pays for damage caused by rain, melting ice or snow, water that enters through a hole in your home, a public water main break, and other causes specified in your policy.
  • Sewer backup coverage: Always included in your policy, this coverage pays to repair your home or replace your personal belongings if they’re damaged by water due to a sewer backup event.
  • Service line protection: This coverage pays to repair or replace damaged exterior water or sewer lines.

Intact doesn’t allow customers to customize their coverage options extensively online, so the package above reflects the default options offered through the company’s online quote system. You may have access to other options if quoting through a broker.

Optional coverage and endorsements

In addition to the standard coverage options included in your quote, you may be able to add, remove, or customize the following insurance coverages:

  • myIdentity™: This optional add-on provides up to $25,000 for expenses associated with identity theft or cyberattacks.
  • myExtras: This program allows homeowners to raise custom limits on high-value items like jewellery, art, and collectibles.
  • Claims advantage: This add-on, only available for customers 49 years old or younger, will cover your deductible up to $1,000 on your first home insurance claim and preserve any claims-free discount applied to your policy.
  • Overland water coverage: This optional flood insurance coverage will pay to repair or replace your home and belongings after a flood, but be aware that coastal flooding is still excluded.
  • Ground water coverage: This endorsement will cover damage caused by water that suddenly enters your home through the foundation or basement walls and floors.
  • Earthquake coverage: This endorsement pays to repair damage caused by an earthquake or other earth movement such as a landslide. Be aware that earthquake deductibles are often very high and coverage may not be available everywhere in Canada.
  • Short-term rental coverage: If you rent out your home for less than a year at a time (such as through Airbnb), you’ll need to add this endorsement to protect your property.
  • Hail and windstorm coverage: In Alberta and British Columbia, damage caused by hail and wind is excluded from Intact’s standard coverage package, and you’ll need these endorsements to add that coverage back.
  • Lifestyle advantage: This optional policy endorsement allows you to receive a cash settlement after a major loss with no obligation to rebuild your home.
  • Travel insurance: You can add emergency medical travel coverage to your home insurance policy.
  • Intact Prestige: This high-value home insurance program offers tailored coverage, custom risk management services, and personalized appraisals for owners of luxury homes with unique insurance needs.

Intact home insurance discounts

Intact Insurance offers at least six distinct discounts for home insurance:

  • Home and auto bundling discount: Intact customers who bundle home and auto insurance are eligible for a discount of 5–12% on their home insurance policy.
  • Credit check: If you authorize a soft credit check, you can earn 25% off your base home insurance premium.
  • Alarm system discounts: Centrally-monitored alarm systems, including burglar alarms and smoke detectors, could earn you a discount on home insurance.
  • Water leak detectors: If you have installed a leak detector system with at least three sensors and an automatic water shutoff valve, you might be eligible for a discount.
  • Claims-free discount: Customers without any home insurance claims for a certain number of years may earn a discounted premium.
  • Mortgage-free discount: If you have no mortgage on your home, you’re eligible for a lower rate.

This may not be an exhaustive list of all Intact’s home insurance discounts; most carriers offer more discounts than they advertise publicly. Working with an insurance advisor or broker could help you understand which discounts you’re eligible for and how they may compare to other carriers’ savings opportunities.

How much does Intact home insurance cost?

The average cost of home insurance from Intact is $278/month for a standard online quote, with rates as low as $227/month or as high as $235+/month depending on location and coverage selections.

Your actual rates from Intact may be higher or lower than these averages depending on the following factors:

  • Coverage selections: Intact’s online quoting system only quotes one basic level of coverage, which includes extended water damage options. If you get quotes through a broker that include higher or lower levels of coverage, your rates may change.
  • Province: Depending on risk factors and residential construction costs in your province, you could see higher or lower rates from Intact.
  • Home location: Intact evaluates your home’s insurance risk in part based on local factors such as property crime rates, proximity to fire services, proximity to bodies of water, and weather patterns.
  • Home age: Older homes are more likely to sustain serious and extensive damage, generating larger and costlier claims.
  • Roof age: The older your roof, the weaker your home’s overall defenses are. A new roof can lower your premiums.

Intact carriers who bundle home and auto insurance reduced their home premiums by $23–$67/month, or 10–23% overall. That’s considerably more generous than the 5–12% home insurance bundling discount that Intact advertises.

Over the course of a 25-year mortgage, Intact’s bundling discounts could save you between $6,900 and $20,100 on home insurance premiums.

The Intact home insurance claims process

Intact’s independent broker network and dedicated claims team will work together to process your home insurance claim. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Contact your insurance broker (and the authorities, if needed): Start by reporting the damage or loss to your property to your broker, as well as the authorities if it involves property crime such as theft or vandalism. Your broker can go over the details of your policy and help you understand what type of claim to file and what coverage to expect.
  2. Report the claim to Intact: Your broker can connect you directly to Intact’s claims team, or you can call 1-866-464-2424 at any time.
  3. Choose a contractor: You can go with a recommended contractor from Intact’s extensive Rely Network of restoration specialists, or choose your own service provider. Opting for a Rely Network contractor may expedite your claim.
  4. Provide a list of damaged or stolen items: If your personal property was affected, you’ll need to provide a detailed list of everything that needs to be replaced, along with documentation such as receipts, photos, invoices, appraisals, and more.
  5. Work closely with your claims representative: Intact’s claims team can also help you set up accommodation if your home is temporarily uninhabitable.

Intact guarantees that, if you file a home insurance claim over the phone by calling 1-866-464-2424, an Intact claims representative will start your claim within 30 minutes of answering your call and arrange emergency support if needed. If Intact fails to meet this guarantee, you’re entitled to a cheque equal to your entire year’s premiums, up to $1,000.

Is Intact home insurance right for you?

Intact home insurance may be an excellent option for homeowners in Ontario who want to bundle home and auto insurance, as well as anyone who prioritizes superior claim service.

While customer reviews of Intact’s claim service are mixed, the company’s wide network of restoration specialists and robust coverage options mean a higher level of service for most. However, it’s worth noting that Intact’s premiums tend to be a little higher than competitors unless you have key discounts, such as a home and auto insurance bundle.
