Is Manulife health insurance good?

By assets, Manulife is the largest insurance company in Canada and one of the biggest health insurance providers in the country. The company’s 125-year history and wide variety of life, health, and travel insurance products make it an excellent choice for customers who want an all-in-one provider.

Manulife’s competitive premiums, comprehensive coverage, and financial stability place its products among the best health insurance plans in Canada. However, its low customer review scores and below-average coverage on some plans may be a turn-off for some.

Our expert take

Manulife offers a large enough selection of health insurance plans to appeal to everyone, but customers of all kinds may take issue with reported delays in processing claims.

PolicyMe's rankings are based on an independent, data-driven review of Canada's leading health and dental insurance products and providers. Our analysis draws on 1,700+ quotes covering 50+ life insurance products from the seven biggest providers in Canada, sourced from official product websites and supplemented with customer ratings from Google.

Rankings are determined first by star rating (highest to lowest) and then by premiums (lowest to highest). To ensure fairness and accuracy, we only make cost and coverage comparisons between plans with the same type of coverage, pricing tier, and eligibility requirements. Our pricing comparisons always compare quotes for the same age groups within the same region.

Our findings are entirely data-driven and do not include paid placements, but should not be considered a substitute for personalized financial or health advice.

How much does Manulife health insurance cost?

Manulife health insurance ranges from $27–$115/month for children, $91–$227/month for adults, and $123–$275/month for a 60-year-old senior. Compared to the industry average, most plans fall at or below the industry average, with the exception of the Flexcare DentalPlus and DrugPlus plans.

Manulife’s most affordable health insurance policy is the FollowMe series, with premiums up to 59% lower than the overall average among similar plans. If you’re on a budget and you aren’t eligible for a FollowMe plan (which requires applicants to be leaving, or have recently left a group plan), your next best choice is ComboPlus Starter or Basic.

High ratings? Yes. High premiums? No.

Manulife Flexcare health insurance

The Flexcare series by Manulife contains seven plans: three ComboPlus plans with drug and dental coverage; two DentalPlus plans with no drug coverage; and two DrugPlus plans with no dental coverage.

Due to its low premiums and competitive coverage, our top pick is the ComboPlus Basic Plan, but your best choice may vary depending on the healthcare available in your home province.

ComboPlus Starter Plan

Manulife
ComboPlus Starter Plan
( 4.0 )
Pre-existing prescriptions
No drug deductible
No basic wait for dental
14% less coverage
than industry average

Manulife's ComboPlus Starter Plan offers attractive premiums at the cost of drug and dental coverage. And with a 50% reimbursement rate, the amount you pay out-of-pocket will match what you claim on every visit to a paramedical professional. For comparison, comparable plans provide an average of $1,890 in paramedical coverage with an average co-payment of $621 per year, leaving policyholders about $1,200 ahead.

Pros

  • 7 optional add-ons available
  • Above-average paramedical and mental health coverage
  • Below-average premiums for all ages
  • Includes access to TELUS Health Virtual Care and survivor benefit
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and travel insurance

Cons

  • Below-average paramedical reimbursement rate
  • Below-average prescription drug coverage
  • 80% of generic prescription drugs (up to $600 per year)
  • Up to 70% of preventative and restorative dental services (up to $400 per year)
  • 100% of vision services every 2 years (up to $70 for eye exams and $150 for prescription lenses, frames, and laser surgery)
  • 50% of visits to 8 paramedical professionals (up to $0 per visit and $300 per profession)
  • 100% of visits to mental health professionals (up to $65 per visit and 10 visits combined per year)
  • 100% of accidental dental services (up to $2,000 per year)
  • 100% of ground and air ambulance transportation (unlimited)

ComboPlus Basic Plan

Manulife
ComboPlus Basic Plan
( 4.0 )
Pre-existing prescriptions
No drug deductible
No basic wait for dental
13% less coverage
than industry average

Despite its name, Manulife's ComboPlus Basic Plan is a mid-level health insurance plan. Unfortunately, its drug coverage doesn't match its pricing aspirations, and its dental coverage rate drops to 50% after the first $400 in eligible expenses.

Pros

  • 7 optional add-ons available
  • Above-average mental health coverage
  • Below-average premiums for children
  • Includes access to TELUS Health Virtual Care and survivor benefit
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and travel insurance

Cons

  • Below-average prescription drug coverage
  • High out-of-pocket dental costs
  • 70% of generic prescription drugs (up to $5,000 per year)
  • Up to 80% of preventative and restorative dental services (up to $750 per year)
  • 100% of vision services every 2 years (up to $70 for eye exams and $250 for prescription lenses, frames, and laser surgery)
  • 60% of visits to 8 paramedical professionals (up to $0 per visit and $500 per profession)
  • 100% of visits to mental health professionals (up to $65 per visit and 15 visits combined per year)
  • 100% of accidental dental services (up to $2,000 per year)
  • 100% of ground and air ambulance transportation (unlimited)

ComboPlus Enhanced Plan

Manulife
ComboPlus Enhanced Plan
( 4.0 )
Pre-existing prescriptions
No drug deductible
No basic wait for dental
13% less coverage
than industry average

ComboPlus Enhanced by Manulife is an affordable choice for young families who want premiums coverage. Its prescription drug coverage leaves a little to be desired, but you can't go wrong with a 90% reimbursement rate.

Pros

  • 7 optional add-ons available
  • Above-average mental health coverage
  • Below-average premiums for children
  • Includes access to TELUS Health Virtual Care and survivor benefit
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and travel insurance

Cons

  • Up to 100% of preventative, restorative, and major dental services (up to $1,320 per year)
  • 100% of vision services every 2 years (up to $70 for eye exams and $250 for prescription lenses, frames, and laser surgery)
  • 80% of visits to 8 paramedical professionals (up to $0 per visit and $500 per profession)
  • 100% of visits to mental health professionals (up to $65 per visit and 15 visits combined per year)
  • 100% of accidental dental services (up to $2,000 per year)
  • 100% of ground and air ambulance transportation (unlimited)

DentalPlus Basic Plan

Manulife
DentalPlus Basic Plan
( 4.0 )
No basic wait for dental
8% more coverage
than industry average

Manulife's DentalPlus Basic plan is a dental-only, guaranteed health insurance plan. Its mental health coverage is excellent, but overall value is lacking. Due to the 50% reimbursement rate on dental and paramedical services, you'll pay as much out-of-pocket as you claim in these two categories, and that's on top of this plan's above-average premiums.

Pros

  • 7 optional add-ons available
  • Above-average mental health coverage
  • Includes access to TELUS Health Virtual Care and survivor benefit
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and travel insurance

Cons

  • Only 50% reimbursement for dental and paramedical services
  • Above-average premiums for all ages
  • Up to 50% of preventative dental services (up to $575 per year)
  • 100% of vision services every 2 years (up to $70 for eye exams and $250 for prescription lenses, frames, and laser surgery)

DentalPlus Enhanced Plan

Manulife
DentalPlus Enhanced Plan
( 4.0 )
No basic wait for dental
13% less coverage
than industry average

Manulife's DentalPlus Enhanced plan is a dental-only, guaranteed health insurance plan. Despite offering more dental coverage than some of its competitors, its reimbursement rate is lower, making the total benefit lower than you'd think.
For example, in the first year of your policy, you could claim up to 70% of $840 (for a total of $588) with DentalPlus Enhanced. Or, you could claim up to 80% of $750 (for a total of $600) with PolicyMe's Dental Care plan, and pay an average of $40 less per month.

Pros

  • 7 optional add-ons available
  • Above-average dental coverage
  • Includes access to TELUS Health Virtual Care and survivor benefit
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and travel insurance

Cons

  • Only 50% reimbursement for dental and paramedical services
  • Above-average premiums for adults and seniors
  • Below-average mental health coverage
  • Up to 70% of preventative dental services (up to $840 per year)
  • 100% of vision services every 2 years (up to $70 for eye exams and $250 for prescription lenses, frames, and laser surgery)

Guaranteed Issue Advanced

Gauranteed Issue Advanced
( 4.0 )
Pre-existing prescriptions
Flexible coverage
No drug deductible
No basic wait for dental
Great for freelancers
1% more coverage
than industry average

Manulife's Guaranteed Issue Enhanced is an extremely competitive choice in Quebec, but carries a premium price tag in most other provinces. Considering the price, we're disappointed it doesn't provide better dental, paramedical, and mental health coverage, all three of which fail to match the competition.

Pros

  • Below-average premiums for children
  • Includes diagnostic services (Quebec only)
  • Includes survivor benefit, discounted TELUS home services, and access to TELUS Health Virtual Care
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance, hospital cash benefit, and travel insurance

Cons

  • Above-average premiums for adults and seniors (except in Quebec)
  • Below-average dental, vision, paramedical, and mental health coverage
  • Ambulance coverage applies only in home province
  • 80% of generic, birth control, smoking cessation, weight loss, and other prescription drugs (up to $2,500 per year)
  • Up to 80% of preventative and restorative dental services (up to $450 per year)
  • 100% of vision services every 2 years (up to $60 for eye exams and $200 for prescription lenses, frames, and laser surgery)
  • 80% of visits to 10 paramedical professionals (up to $0 per visit and $0 per profession)
  • 100% of visits to mental health professionals (up to $45 per visit and 10 visits combined per year)
  • 100% of accidental dental services (up to $2,000 per year)
  • 100% of ground and air ambulance transportation (unlimited)

DrugPlus Basic Plan

Manulife
DrugPlus Basic Plan
( 0.0 )
(N/A)

Manulife’s no-dental, DrugPlus Basic Plan makes a good supplemental health insurance plan for Canadians who already enjoy dental coverage. It offers fairly generous coverage, except for a 60% paramedical reimbursement rate and a $2,000 annual limit on accidental dental work.

Pros

  • 7 optional add-ons available
  • Above-average vision, paramedical, and mental health coverage
  • Includes access to TELUS Health Virtual Care and survivor benefit
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and travel insurance

Cons

  • 60% reimbursement rate for paramedical visits
  • Below-average accidental dental coverage
  • 70% of generic prescription drugs (up to $5,000 per year)
  • 100% of vision services every 2 years (up to $70 for eye exams and $250 for prescription lenses, frames, and laser surgery)
  • 60% of visits to 8 paramedical professionals (up to $500 per profession and $4,000 per year combined)
  • 100% of visits to mental health professionals (up to $65 per visit and 15 visits combined per year)
  • 100% of accidental dental services (up to $2,000 per year)
  • 100% of ground and air ambulance transportation (unlimited)

DrugPlus Enhanced Plan

Manulife
DrugPlus Advanced Plan
( 0.0 )
(N/A)

Choosing Manulife’s no-dental, DrugPlus Enhanced Plan over DrugPlus Basic will certainly enhance your prescription drug and paramedical coverage, but it won’t do much else. Your vision, mental health, and many other types of coverage (including a below-average $2,000 per year for accidental dental) will remain the same, so make sure the price increase is worth it for you.

Pros

  • 7 optional add-ons available
  • High drug and paramedical reimbursement rate
  • Includes access to TELUS Health Virtual Care and survivor benefit
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and travel insurance

Cons

  • Same vision, paramedical, mental health, and other types of coverage limits as DrugPlus Basic
  • 90% of generic, brand-name, and birth control prescription drugs (up to $10,000 per year)
  • 100% of vision services every 2 years (up to $70 for eye exams and $250 for prescription lenses, frames, and laser surgery)
  • 80% of visits to 8 paramedical professionals (up to $500 per profession and $4,000 per year combined)
  • 100% of visits to mental health professionals (up to $65 per visit and 15 visits combined per year)
  • 100% of accidental dental services (up to $2,000 per year)
  • 100% of ground and air ambulance transportation (unlimited)

All coverage comparisons reflect the total amount of prescription drug, dental, vision, paramedical, mental health, accidental dental, and ambulance coverage versus the industry average for comparable plans.

Manulife FollowMe health insurance

As long as you’re within 90 days of the termination of your previous (or current) group health plan, you can replace your benefits with Manulife FollowMe. FollowMe offers some of the most competitive health insurance premiums on the market, and although most plans don’t provide enough accidental dental coverage for our liking, they’re a decent and value-packed choice.

For the best coverage and savings, our top pick is the top-of-the-line FollowMe Premiere.

Manulife
FollowMe Basic
( 4.0 )
Pre-existing prescriptions
No drug deductible
Flexible coverage

7% less coverage
than industry average

Manulife's FollowMe Basic offers fair value with a few caveats. First, you'll have to pay out-of-pocket for dental care. Second, the annual maximum for its paramedical coverage is quite low. And third, you may want better accidental dental protection if you're active or you have young children.

Pros

  • 2 optional add-ons available
  • Below-average premiums for all ages
  • Includes diagnostic services (Quebec only)
  • Includes survivor benefit and access to TELUS Health Virtual Care
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and semi-private hospital accommodations

Cons

  • No dental coverage
  • Only $2,000 of accidental dental coverage per year
  • 80% of generic and diabetic prescription drugs (up to $500 per year)
  • 100% of vision services every 2 years (up to $60 for eye exams and $150 for prescription lenses, frames, and laser surgery)

FollowMe Enhanced is a no-dental, replacement health insurance plan designed by Manulife for job seekers and new entrepreneurs. Assuming you have dental coverage under another plan (or simply excellent teeth), you'll enjoy a fairly competitive selection of dental, vision, paramedical benefits, and more.
Just make sure to check out PolicyMe's Protect Classic before you commit. Depending on where you live, you could trade a modest upcharge for enhanced drug, paramedical, mental health, and accidental dental coverage--plus dental!

Pros

  • Includes diagnostic services (Quebec only)
  • Includes fracture benefit, survivor benefit, and access to TELUS Health Virtual Care

Manulife's Enhanced Plus health insurance plan offers a competitive price tag and benefits, except when it comes to your teeth. Although its annual dental coverage increases to $1,000 in year 3, you'll always be stuck with just $2,500 per year of accidental dental work, which can easily exceed $1,000 per tooth.
If you're active or you have young kids, PolicyMe's Protect Classic offers four times the accidental dental protection for about the same price (or less!), depending on your home province.

Pros

  • 2 optional add-ons available
  • Above-average drug coverage
  • Below-average premiums for all ages
  • Includes diagnostic services (Quebec only)
  • Includes fracture benefit, survivor benefit, and access to TELUS Health Virtual Care
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and semi-private hospital accommodations

Manulife's FollowMe Premiere plan is cheaper than most of the competition and provides just as much coverage--for the most part, anyway. There's not much you can do about the $360 bi-annual limit on vision care, but you'll get up to $1,500 per year in dental coverage if you make it to year three.

Pros

  • 2 optional add-ons available
  • Below-average premiums for all ages
  • Includes diagnostic services (Quebec only)
  • Includes fracture benefit, survivor benefit, and access to TELUS Health Virtual Care
  • Includes accidental death and dismemberment insurance and semi-private hospital accommodations

Cons

  • Below-average dental and vision coverage
  • 80% of generic, brand-name, and diabetic prescription drugs (up to $2,800 per year)
  • Up to 80% of preventative, restorative, and major dental services (up to $800 per year)

How does Manulife health insurance compare to other providers?

Manulife’s FollowMe replacement health insurance plans lead the pack when it comes to affordable pricing, although their accidental dental coverage could be higher. If you aren’t leaving a group health plan, Manulife’s ComboPlus plans are another affordable option, especially ComboPlus Basic.

Either way, we’d skip the DrugPlus and DentalPlus series, both of which fail to impress with either their coverage or premiums.

Does Manulife have critical illness insurance?

Manulife’s CoverMe Critical Illness Insurance promises to deliver a lump-sum payment of up to $75,000 no more than 30 days after you experience one of 5 covered conditions: aortic surgery, coronary artery bypass surgery, heart attack, life-threatening cancer, or stroke. While not as comprehensive as other critical illness insurance policies, Manulife sweetens the deal with the offer of a Return of Premium Option, and a complimentary medical second opinion service.

For more traditional (and comprehensive) critical illness insurance, try Lifecheque, which is available with either standard or basic coverage. Besides covering more conditions, standard Lifecheque policies include more perks, riders, and your choice of four term options.

Does Manulife have disability insurance?

Manulife sells Personal Accident Disability Insurance to provide you with $6,000 per month in the event a disability threatens your livelihood. The plan is guaranteed, renewable until age 90, and covers you for two years, five years, or until you turn 65.

Is Manulife health insurance worth it?

Manulife offers an unbeatable product selection, complete with a wide range of add-ons, perks, and online tools. The application and buying process is incredibly easy, although judging from its customer service reviews, calls and claims may not be so frictionless.

Overall, Manulife is a good pick if you’re interested in low-cost, replacement health insurance plans after leaving a group benefits plan. Its FollowMe series boasts extremely competitive premiums, and unlike the ComboPlus series of plans, it doesn’t lack coverage.

However, you may want to consider alternatives such as PolicyMe, GreenShield, and GMS for drug or dental-only health insurance coverage. We don’t think Manulife’s FlexcareDrugPlus and DentalPlus plans offer enough coverage to justify their monthly premiums, and there are cheaper and more comprehensive plans available.
