Guide to OPCF 20: Coverage for Transportation Replacement

What is OPCF 20?
Ontario Policy Change Form 20, or Coverage for Transportation Replacement, is an optional add-on for auto insurance policies that provides coverage for a rental car or alternative transportation if your insured vehicle is being repaired following a covered loss.
Also known as loss of use coverage, OPCF 20 is available only if you carry either comprehensive or collision coverage. If you don’t have another vehicle available or ready access to public transportation, OPCF 20 can make a huge difference when filing a car insurance claim.
You can download OPCF 20 from the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) website.
What does OPCF 20 cover?
OPCF 20 covers “reasonable expenses” for a rental vehicle that’s similar to your insured vehicle or for taxis, public transportation, or rideshares. Your OPCF form will list the exact per-day and per-occurrence coverage limit for transportation replacement.
Coverage begins at:
- The time of damage or loss (e.g., theft) that renders the car inoperable
- 12:01 am on the day after you report the theft of your insured vehicle to your insurance company or the police, or
- The time your automobile is delivered for repairs
Does a deductible apply to OPCF 20?
You don’t have to pay a separate car insurance deductible to use OPCF 20, but you will need to pay the applicable deductible for the coverage you use to pay for repairs.
What does OPCF 20 not cover?
OPCF 20 won’t cover transportation costs that go beyond the per-day and per-occurrence limit listed on your form.
OPCF 20 won’t cover a rental vehicle if your insured car is undergoing routine vehicle repairs or maintenance. Unless the damage was caused by a peril (e.g., fire, theft, or vandalism) that’s covered under your policy, you can’t use loss of use coverage to pay for alternate transportation.
You can only claim a rental vehicle under OPCF 20 if the cost of repairs to your vehicle exceed the deductible that applies to the relevant coverage, such as comprehensive coverage, collision or upset, or direct compensation property damage (DCPD) coverage.
How much does it cost to add OPCF 20?
On average, it costs $5–$12/month to add loss of use coverage through OPCF 20 to your auto insurance policy. OPCF 20 is often bundled with another car insurance endorsement, OPCF 27: Liability for Damage to Non-Owned Automobile(s), which extends your personal auto insurance to non-owned vehicles such as rentals or borrowed cars.

Your own costs may differ from the sample pricing shown above. If you’re not sure whether the cost to add OPCF 20 is worth it, consider working with an insurance broker to compare your options from different carriers.
Who needs OPCF 20?
If you don’t have easy access to alternative transportation such as public transit or a second vehicle, it’s a good idea to add OPCF 20 to your auto insurance policy.
OPCF 20 is a cheap way to reduce your expenses in the event of a major auto insurance claim or total loss. While it may not be necessary for minor repairs, it can cut down on both stress and costs if you’re unable to drive your primary vehicle during a claim, which can take weeks in many cases.
