Limits on older vehicles

If your car is over 20 years old (model year 2006 or earlier), you can’t get car insurance quotes online from Aviva. You’ll need to call an advisor at 1-844-872-3821 instead to discuss your coverage options.

Aviva car insurance discounts

Aviva offers at least seven distinct discounts for auto insurance customers:

  • Home and auto bundling discount: Aviva offers discounts up to 15% off auto insurance premiums for customers who also purchase a home insurance policy.
  • Electric vehicle discount: If you insure an electric or hybrid vehicle with Aviva, you could earn up to 10% off your premium, but be aware that discount rates vary based on location and vehicle.
  • Retiree discount: If you’re retired, you might be eligible for lower rates.
  • Multi-vehicle discount: Aviva offers an unspecified discount for customers who insure more than one vehicle.
  • Anti-theft device discount: If you install an Aviva-approved anti-theft device such as a TAG system, you may qualify for an auto insurance discount.
  • Conviction-free discount: If the primary operator on your policy has no past driving convictions, you may earn a discount.
  • Winter tire discount (Ontario only): If you install winter tires on your vehicle each year from December to March, you’re eligible for a lower premium.

This may not be an exhaustive list of all of Aviva’s discounts, since the carrier provides less public information on discount opportunities than many competitors. If you want to understand which discounts you’re eligible for from Aviva, you may want to work with a broker.

Aviva’s usage-based insurance discount: Aviva Journey

Aviva’s usage-based car insurance discount program is called Aviva Journey. In addition to personalized auto insurance rates, Aviva Journey offers access to exclusive rewards and discounts from a wide variety of retailers, restaurants, and service providers.

  • How it works: Aviva Journey uses GPS technology through your smartphone to track your driving in real time, offer safe driving tips, and assign a driving score that can raise or lower your auto insurance premium.
  • What it tracks: Aviva Journey bases your safety score on acceleration, braking, speeding, cornering, and distracted driving events. It also collects data on road type, time of day, day of the week, and distance travelled, all of which are factored into your score.
  • Activation discount: 10%
  • Maximum discount: 20%
  • Maximum potential penalty: 5%

How much does Aviva car insurance cost?

On average, Aviva car insurance costs around $170/month for a single driver with a single car and $318/month for a household with two cars and two drivers.

Your actual auto insurance quotes from Aviva may vary based on a wide range of rating factors, including:

  • Location: Aviva considers traffic patterns, weather risks, and crime in your area when setting the cost of coverage.
  • Coverage limits: The amount and type of coverage on your policy plays a major role in determining your premium.
  • Age: Younger drivers or those with fewer years of on-road experience pay higher premiums.
  • Gender: Women and men have slightly different statistical risk factors as drivers and may see different premiums as a result.
  • Vehicle: Your vehicle’s make, model, age, condition, modifications, and safety equipment all affect the level of risk you carry.
  • Driving history: Past moving violations or at-fault accidents will raise your rates in most cases.

Why are rates so high in Brampton?

Quotes for Brampton, Ontario brought up Aviva’s average pricing significantly. Brampton is one of Canada’s leading auto theft hotspots, with over 43 million in theft claims in 2025 alone and a 565% increase in motor vehicle theft between 2017 and 2025 according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada.

Because one of our sample vehicles—the Ford F-150—is a common theft target, quotes for this vehicle in Brampton are extremely high. Aviva applies a $500 surcharge to high-theft vehicles that do not have an approved theft recovery device installed.

Other cities facing high auto theft rates and rising car insurance costs include Markham, Oakville, and Richmond Hill, all in the Greater Toronto Area.

Aviva car insurance cost: Single-driver quotes

The Aviva car insurance claims process

In order to file an auto insurance claim with Aviva, you’ll need to follow these steps:

  1. Make sure everyone is safe: Pull to the side of the road, check for injuries, and/or wait for danger to pass. Contact the authorities if necessary (e.g., for an accident with injuries/property damage or a vehicle theft).
  2. Document everything: Take photos and videos of your vehicle and the site of the incident. Record the date, time, weather, and any other relevant circumstances, along with your own detailed account of what led to the damage or loss.
  3. Report the claim to Aviva: Have your policy number ready, along with all the documentation you’ve assembled.
  4. Work with a claims professional: Depending on the nature and severity of the claim, your assigned adjuster may be able to handle it over the phone, or they may come to see your vehicle in person to evaluate the extent of the damage and repairs needed.
  5. Have your car repaired: Find an Aviva AutoCare Centre near you or choose an independent service provider to repair your vehicle.

How to file a Aviva car insurance claim

You can submit an auto insurance claim online through Aviva’s online services portal or call 1-866-MYAVIVA (1-866-692-8482) 24/7 to file a claim by phone.

Do I have to go to an Aviva AutoCare Centre?

You have the right to have your vehicle repaired at any auto centre or repair shop, regardless of whether it’s part of Aviva’s preferred network. There are pros and cons to choosing your insurance company’s approved repairer:

  • Your claim may be processed more quickly
  • Aviva can bill the provider directly, so you only pay your deductible upfront
  • Work completed at an Aviva AutoCare Centre carries a lifetime guarantee
  • Setting up a rental vehicle may be easier
  • Labor may not be the best quality
  • Technicians may have less specialized training
  • Network repair shops may cut corners due to pressure from insurers

The bottom line: Do your research when picking a repair shop to handle your auto repairs. Ask family, friends, or coworkers for recommendations or for their experience with specific Aviva AutoCare Centres.
